When enrolling your child in dance classes at The Renaissance School of Dance, one of the most common questions we hear from parents is about dance attire. What to Wear to Dance Class? Is there a specific uniform?
If you look like a dancer, you feel like a dancer! We believe that wearing studio uniforms give students a sense of belonging to our dance family as well as creating an identity for our studio in the greater community.
Let’s get into these queries to ensure your little dancer is as comfortable and confident as possible in their dance journey.
At The Renaissance School of Dance, we believe that clothing should never be a barrier to enjoying dance. We aim to make dance accessible and enjoyable for every child, emphasizing comfort, ease of movement, and self-expression.
The Importance of Appropriate Attire
Proper dance attire is crucial not only for aesthetics but also for functionality. Dance-specific clothing allows instructors to see a dancer’s alignment and movements clearly, which is essential for teaching proper technique. Moreover, the right attire helps dancers move freely and safely, minimizing the risk of injuries.
Our uniforms also:

- Help identify non-students in the studio
- Increase a sense of belonging and studio pride
- Improve attendance & commitment
- Allows teachers to make corrections with posture, body positioning, safety etc. without the hindrance of non-suitable clothing.
What to Wear to Dance Class
For beginners and recreational dancers, we recommend comfortable, form-fitting clothing that allows for freedom of movement. You can collect orders from the studio. Please name your uniform! You’ll be amazed at the amount of lost property we collect! Here are some suitable options:
- Leggings or Shorts: Stretchable and snug to allow for a full range of motion.
- Fitted T-shirt or Tank Top: Ensures comfort while keeping the attire from getting caught during movements.
- Leotards: Optional but recommended for ballet classes for a traditional look and ease in movement assessment by instructors.

BABYBALLET Dancers will need a tutu, ballet shoes & tap shoes, you can also get a matching sparkly hairbow. Choose between blue or pink tutus 🙂
There are also optional packages including taps shoes, cardigan and Starlet studio mascot doll!

- ACRO Dancers will need an ‘RSD Blue’ leotard, teamed up with matching hot pants. Barefeet is perfect. Hair is to be neatly tied back in 2 plaits.
- MUSICAL THEATRE & JAZZ Dancers will need an ‘RSD Blue’ leotard, teamed up with matching hot pants. Sparkly hairbow & Jazz Shoes. Hair tied up in ponytail.
Footwear
Footwear depends largely on the type of dance:
- Ballet: We order ballet shoes to fit like a glove! These are so important to make sure your dancer moves comfortably and safely.
- Girls Tap Shoes: Children’s SizesCan’t stop moving your feet?! Tap shoes will solve all your problems!
All our 6&under classes include tap dancing – to develop rhythm, timing and co-ordination – and of course lots of fun making all that noise!You can also purchase this cardigan as part of the SUPERSTAR babyballet SET – including cardigan, tap shoes, mini teddy/twinkle bear and babyballet activity book.

Do I Have to Purchase a Uniform?
For your first class we recommend comfortable clothing, tshirt and leggings with barefeet.
Hip hop please wear sneakers, babyballet you are welcome to wear a pretty skirt or dress!
However, once you register, there is a specific uniform required for each dance style. These are of high quality and designed to keep the body free to move and for the teacher to be able to see the body movements.
